Rebuilding Bonds

It's been a few months since Face's rescue, and everyone's still tensely looking over their shoulders. They've split up for the moment, hoping to better evade potential pursuers, but no one's exactly thrilled about it.

Face's memory is slowly returning, bits of it coming back like pieces of a patchwork quilt. There's still a lot missing, though,and it still hurts that it's gone. Which is why they're standing in a pawnshop on a dingy side street looking for a deal.

It's not what either of them want, really. They should get to have something special, something theirs. But they just...can't, right now, so they make do with what they've got. Just like always.

"Well... in all fairness... he kind of is..." Face chuckles, tilting his head Murdock's way before murmuring; "And I guess I'm kind of crazy in love... you know that feeling, don't ya?"

He licks his lips, dragging a finger across the glass. "Maybe, forty-five percent?"

Her eyes narrow. "Fifty's as low as I'll go."

Murdock's still making puppy eyes at Face, sort of forgetting that they're supposed to be conning. Luckily, it's not too much of a stretch to do what they're doing.

It's also pretty much a better deal than he'd expected they'd get. "You drive a hard bargain."

He shrugs, and manages his wallet out of his front pocket - peeling off a few bills. "But, I think that's fair."

"Yeah, sure." She takes the bills and tucks them into the till as Murdock slips his hand back into his partner's.

"Think that should take care of us, right hon?"

[notjustaface]

"Oh, we are so taken care of..." he purrs, offering the lady one last smirk; "thank you for your time, Miss."

She barely glances them over, giving Face more than a passing look that he might actually consider flattering if she wasn't clearly not taking his bait. "Hey, you been in here before?"

"Uh, no. Pretty sure we haven't."

That gets a raised eyebrow in Face's general direction.

His brow crinkles and Face shakes his head negative; right - defer to the guy with memory loss, great idea!

"No, nah... I mean, maybe on a wild weekend or something." He laughs nervously. "Come on babe, let's go show off the new shiny."

"Sounds good to me, sweetie."

He gives the woman a passing nod before pressing a kiss to Face's cheek.

He can't help but giggle, just a little bit - leaning heavily against Murdock until well out of the pawn shop and down the street toward - well, who knew where. One of the benefits of transiency was not having anywhere particular to be.

"I swear... I haven't been shot down that hard in... ever." He shook head head, stopping at a crosswalk; "I'm not losing my game, am I?"

"You still got us a deal, baby. I'd say your game's still good."

He nudges him in the ribs affectionately. "Besides, you got me, so it's pretty much like you won the game."

Grinning ear to ear, Face settles down on a bus stop bench and pulls Murdock down with him. "Mmmm, I like the sound of that deal."

He lifts the ring up, turning it a little on his finger; "Gonna have to fatten me up a little bit... guess I'll have to get a job or something."

He happily climbs into Face's lap, ignoring the fact that it's broad daylight and they're in one of the not-that-great parts of town.

"Just like Montreal." He frowns as he sees Face's happy expression falter. "...Still don't remember that, huh?"

Of course, it helps that between the two of them they can pretty much beat down anyone that would get in their way.

That memory, unfortunately was one of the ones that didn't stick around or come back. "Montreal was pretty good though, right?"

"It was."

He'd been so happy there...

"It'll be okay. This'll be good."

He sounds a little like he's trying to convince himself.

[notjustaface]

"Was there where we... uh..." He laughs, once more fidgiting with his ring; "tied the knot?"

He wishes he remembered, he's tried anything he could think of short of hypnosis and memory regression.

He shakes his head. That would have been nice, but no.

"It was on a cruise. We were after some gun-runners."

[notjustaface]

Face laughed again, leaning in to nuzzle against Murdock's neck - inhaling the familiar sweaty scent of his too-long hair.

"I was thinking about applying as a dealer at one of the casinos..." he shrugs; "but I'm pretty sure their background check is through enough to know I'm not a Hispanic guy from Jersey that died three years ago."

"I think that would be beyond even your talents, babe."

He reluctantly slides off his lap to take a seat next to him.

"You did bartending before. Seemed to work out okay."

Aww, but now his lap's gonna get cold...

He shrugs, leaning against his partner with a slight sigh. "Yeah, I could probably handle that. Little bit of Cocktail..."

He'll warm him up good as soon as they find somewhere to stay for the night.

"Might give you a chance to work on your game," he teases.

[notjustaface]

"Low blow, babe... low blow..." he laughs anyway, brushing a kiss against Murdock's scruffy jaw.

"Maybe get into one of those upscale places... I know you like your man in a tux."

"Like you whatever you're wearing."

It's the honest truth. He likes him in anything, including nothing.

(... Especially nothing, if you want to be perfectly frank about it.)

[notjustaface]

"You're terrible..." He smirks, knowing full and well Murdock knows he means 'you're perfect'. "Okay... next stop - we gotta get a place to crash for a couple days... I'm liking the vibe of Vegas - nice and invisible for us."

"You love me."

They both know that's the truth.

"Sure. Should be fun."

He remembers what happened the last time they looked for a place to stay in Vegas, but Face doesn't and he sure as hell isn't about to tell him.

"Mmmm, how long do you think it'll take to scam a penthouse?"

Their budget is decidedly less Hilton, more Motel 6 - and while it does the job, there's a lot to bed said about sleeping in style and not potential bed bugs.

"I give it say... an hour? And that's only because I look kind a Reno washout."
